No Better Time to 'Insulate' your Check Book

Insulation material, when properly used, can make your home more comfortable and energy-efficient, and can significantly reduce heating and cooling bills throughout the year.
Insulation comes in many different forms-
v  Blankets, including batts and rolls:  Whether as continuous rolls or pre-cut panels called batts, blanket insulation is perhaps the most common type used in homes in the United States.

v  Loose fill:  This type of insulation is quite adaptable and can conform to any space without disturbing any structures or finishes.

v  Sprayed Foam Insulation: Talk about adaptable this type of insulation allows you to fill even the nooks and crannies in the walls.

v  Rigid insulation: This insulates your home from the roof to the foundation, reducing energy losses through the house frame.

v  Reflective insulation: This type of insulation is most effective in reducing downward heat flow.

v Radiant barrier: Especially useful in Florida or any hot, sunny climate, this will help you keep your home cooler.

 R-Value

R -Value is the ability of insulation material to reduce heat flow. The greater the R-value, the more this heat flow is reduced. It's important to know that the R-value depends on the type of insulation, its thickness, and its density. Insulation is important because of its ability to reduce the amount of heat that flows between the inside and outside of your home. The effectiveness of an insulation material’s resistance to heat flow also depends on how and where the insulation is installed. Insulation that is compressed will not provide its full rated R-value. The overall R-value of a wall or ceiling will be somewhat different from the R-value of the insulation itself because heat flows more readily through studs, joists, and other building materials.

So, when calculating the R-value needed for you home it's best to contact experienced, licensed contractor that understands how insulation works so they can help you determine the best option for your home and budget.

Your Savings & Comfort

Insulation costs depend on R-value and type of material; and unless your home was specially constructed for energy efficiency, you can probably reduce your energy bills by adding more insulation. Many older homes have less insulation than homes built today, but even adding insulation to a newer home can pay for itself within a few years.  On average, you can save up to 20% on your home’s heating and cooling costs or up to 10% on its total energy costs by adding insulation or replacing damaged insulation.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF IT’S TIME TO REPLACE YOUR OLD HEATING AND COOLING EQUIPMENT OR IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR OVERALL SYSTEM?

IT MAY BE TIME TO CALL A PROFESSIONAL TO HELP YOU MAKE A CHANGE IF:

1.     Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old. Consider replacing with ENERGY STAR® qualified equipment that uses at least 20 percent less energy than new standard models.

2.     Your home has excessive dust. Leaky ducts can pull particles and air in from attics, crawlspaces and basements and distribute them through the house. Having your ducts sealed may be a solution.

3.     Your cooling system is noisy. You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.

4.     Your equipment needs frequent repairs and your bills are going up. Your heating and cooling equipment may have become less efficient.

5.     Your home has humidity problems. Poor equipment operation, inadequate equipment, and leaky ductwork can cause the air to be too dry in the winter or too humid in the summer.

6.     Some of your rooms are too hot or cold. Improper equipment operation, duct problems or inadequate insulation could be the cause.

Is a Packaged Air Conditioning System Right for You?

Unlike most heating and cooling systems which are divided into outdoor an indoor section; a package unit includes all the elements necessary to heat and or cool your home in one. Depending on your home’s construction, your package system can be installed on the roof or ground level on a slab.

In Florida heat pumps will serve to perform the double duty of cooling and heating your home. If temperatures drop, they can extract heat from outside air then transfer it inside. Additionally, heat pump can also extract heat from the inside and transfer it outside to the cool house. In the case of a packaged air conditioner it provides both cooling a warmth.

Your total home comfort depends on many variables, the square footage of your home, the number of floors and rooms, the suns exposure, the materials your home was constructed form and your own personal choices.

To learn more about the choices available to you contact your Nate certified professionals at Superior Heating and Cooling Management. Proudly serving all of Tampa Bay for over 27 years!
