Common Central Air Conditioning Problems

Common problems that affect your air conditioner are typically a result faulty installation, poor service procedures, and inadequate maintenance. Improper installation of a central air conditioner can result in leaky ducts and low airflow. A refrigerant charge does not match the manufacturer’s specifications will impair the operation and efficiency of the unit. Unqualified technicians often fail to find refrigerant charging problems or even worsen the problems by adding refrigerant to a system that is already full.

Refrigerant Leaks
If your air conditioner is low on refrigerant, either it was undercharged when it was installed, or it leaks. If it leaks, simply adding refrigerant is not the answer. A certified technician should fix any leak, test the repair, and then charge the system with the correct amount of refrigerant. The efficiency of your air conditioner is greatest when the refrigerant charge exactly matches the manufacturer’s specification.
Unsatisfactory or Lack of Maintenance
If you allow filters and air conditioning coils to become dirty, the air conditioner will not work properly, and the compressor or fans are likely to fail prematurely. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of preventive maintenance to reduce breakdowns and the increased utility costs associated with forgoing regularly scheduled maintenance.
Controls Breakdown
The compressor and fan controls can wear out, especially when the air conditioner turns on and off frequently. Corrosion of wire and terminals is a problem in many systems and should be checked with your annual preventive maintenance tune-up.
Clogged Drain Lines
Your drain line takes moisture away from your air conditioning unit; it removes excess water that drips off your air conditioner’s inside unit.  When this excess water combines with dust, dog hair and other air borne debris you’re A/C system is at risk of shutting down due to a clogged drain line.
