ATTENTION SMOKERS!

The EPA’s assessment of the respiratory health risks of passive smoking (Lung Cancer and other maladies) concludes that exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) — commonly known as secondhand smoke — is responsible for approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths each year in nonsmoking adults and impairs the respiratory health of hundreds of thousands of children.
Secondhand smoke is a mixture of the smoke given off by the burning of tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars or pipes and the smoke exhaled by smokers. Secondhand smoke contains more than 7,000 substances, several of which are known to cause cancer in humans. And this second-hand smoke can move easily between the rooms in your home. Additionally, exposure to secondhand smoke has also been shown in several studies to increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
IN FACT –
  • Children who live in homes where people smoke may get sick more often with coughs, wheezing, ear infections, bronchitis or pneumonia.
  • Children with asthma may have asthma attacks that are more severe or occur more often.
  • Opening windows or using fans or air conditioners will not stop secondhand smoke exposure.
  • The U.S. Surgeon General says that secondhand smoke can cause Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, also known as SIDS.
So, removing secondhand smoke from the indoor environment will improve the indoor air quality and health of your home and family.

Control Indoor Pollutants & Reduce Asthma

Several sources of air pollution are found in our homes. Some pollutants cause health problems such as sore eyes, a burning throat, runny nose, headaches, or fatigue. These indoor air pollutants cause or worsen allergies, respiratory illnesses (such as asthma), heart disease, cancer, and other serious long-term conditions.

Many of these pollutants are especially harmful for children, elderly people, and those with health problems.

Tips that will Help You-

Control the Source: The most effective way to improve indoor air is to eliminate individual sources or reduce their emissions.
Ventilate: Increasing the amount of fresh air brought indoors helps reduce pollutants inside. Weather permitting, permits, open windows. Use bathroom and kitchen fans to help remove pollutants.
Understand: Follow manufacturers’ instructions when using products or appliances that may release pollutants into the indoor air.
Changing A/C Filters Regularly: Central air conditioners have filters to trap dust and other pollutants in the air. Make sure to change or clean the filters regularly.
Humidity: The humidity inside can affect the concentrations of some indoor air pollutants. High humidity keeps the air moist and increases the likelihood of mold. Keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. Use a moisture or humidity gauge, available at most hardware stores, to see if the humidity in your home is at a good level. To increase humidity, use a vaporizer or humidifier. To decrease humidity, open the windows if it is not humid outdoors. If it is warm, turn on the air conditioner or adjust the humidity setting on the humidifier.

Common Central Air Conditioning Problems

Common problems that affect your air conditioner are typically a result faulty installation, poor service procedures, and inadequate maintenance. Improper installation of a central air conditioner can result in leaky ducts and low airflow. A refrigerant charge does not match the manufacturer’s specifications will impair the operation and efficiency of the unit. Unqualified technicians often fail to find refrigerant charging problems or even worsen the problems by adding refrigerant to a system that is already full.

Refrigerant Leaks
If your air conditioner is low on refrigerant, either it was undercharged when it was installed, or it leaks. If it leaks, simply adding refrigerant is not the answer. A certified technician should fix any leak, test the repair, and then charge the system with the correct amount of refrigerant. The efficiency of your air conditioner is greatest when the refrigerant charge exactly matches the manufacturer’s specification.
Unsatisfactory or Lack of Maintenance
If you allow filters and air conditioning coils to become dirty, the air conditioner will not work properly, and the compressor or fans are likely to fail prematurely. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of preventive maintenance to reduce breakdowns and the increased utility costs associated with forgoing regularly scheduled maintenance.
Controls Breakdown
The compressor and fan controls can wear out, especially when the air conditioner turns on and off frequently. Corrosion of wire and terminals is a problem in many systems and should be checked with your annual preventive maintenance tune-up.
Clogged Drain Lines
Your drain line takes moisture away from your air conditioning unit; it removes excess water that drips off your air conditioner’s inside unit.  When this excess water combines with dust, dog hair and other air borne debris you’re A/C system is at risk of shutting down due to a clogged drain line.

DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS!

Law may lead to Skyrocketing Central A/C Costs

The most broadly utilized residential cooling refrigerants is refrigerant-22, normally specified to as R-22 and it might be in your heating and cooling unit. This refrigerant is being eliminated by US law under the EPA. Subsequently, it is ending up increasingly costly and later will be difficult to get. Production and importation will cease by 2020 and at that time only reused/recycled R-22 will be available at a very steep price.

Even now costs for R-22 have risen sharply. You may not require R-22 refrigerant when your A/C unit is being serviced, but if you do, you will see a sharp rise —and costs are probably going to keep on rising as it ends up harder to acquire. All air conditioning systems manufactured before 2010 likely use R-22, So staying current with preventive maintenance is your best bet.

TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR HEAT PUMP

Many of you know that proper operation and maintenance of your heat pump will save you money and energy. Like all heating and cooling systems, regular preventive maintenance is the key to keeping your cooling and heating system operating efficiently. The difference between the energy consumption of a well-maintained heat pump and a severely neglected one ranges from 15% to 30%!
Following these simple, inexpensive tips will keep your air conditioning running efficiently, prevent costly breakdowns and help extend the life your cooling and heating unit.

1.     Continuous indoor fan operation can degrade heat pump performance unless your system uses a high-efficiency, variable-speed fan motor. Operate the system on the "auto" fan setting on the thermostat.

2.     Clean or change filters once a month or as needed and maintain the system according to manufacturer's instructions.

3.     Dirty filters, coils, and fans reduce airflow through the system. Reduced airflow decreases system performance and can damage your system's compressor.

4.     You should also have your NATE certified technician service your heat pump at least every year. Your Superior Heating and Cooling Management technician can do the following:

o   Inspect ducts, filters, blower, and the indoor coil for dirt and other obstructions
o   Diagnose and seal duct leakage
o   Verify adequate airflow by measurement
o   Verify correct refrigerant charge by measurement
o   Check for refrigerant leaks
o   Inspect electric terminals, and, if necessary, clean and tighten connections, and apply nonconductive coating
o   Lubricate motors, and inspect belts for tightness and wear
o   Verify correct electric control, making sure that heating is locked out when the thermostat calls for cooling or heating
o   Verify correct thermostat operation
o   Verify Manufactures Warranty

A/C MINI-SPLITS - MAIN ADVANTAGES

The main advantages of mini splits are their small size and flexibility for zoning or heating and cooling individual rooms. Many models can have as many as four indoor air-handling units (for four zones or rooms) connected to one outdoor unit. The number depends on how much heating or cooling is required for the building or each zone (which in turn is affected by how well the building is insulated). Each of the zones has its own thermostat, so you only need to condition occupied spaces. This will save energy and money.

Ductless mini-split systems are easier to install than some other types of space conditioning systems. For example, the hook-up between the outdoor and indoor units generally requires only a three-inch hole through a wall for the conduit. Most manufacturers of this type of system can provide a variety of lengths of connecting conduits, and, if necessary, you can locate the outdoor unit as far away as 50 feet from the indoor evaporator. This makes it possible to cool rooms on the front side of a house but locate the compressor in a more advantageous or inconspicuous place on the outside of the building.
Mini splits have no ducts, so they avoid the energy losses associated with the ductwork of central forced air systems. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for space conditioning, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space such as an attic.

In comparison to other add-on systems, mini splits offer more interior design flexibility. The indoor air handlers can be suspended from a ceiling, mounted flush into a drop ceiling, or hung on a wall. Floor-standing models are also available. Most indoor units are about seven inches deep and have sleek, high tech-looking jackets. Many also offer a remote control to make it easier to turn the system on and off when it's positioned high on a wall or suspended from a ceiling.

Split systems can help keep your home safer, because there is only a small hole in the wall. Through-the-wall and window-mounted room air conditioners can provide easy access for intruders.

Improve Air Quality in Every Room

Asthma is a serious, sometimes life-threatening respiratory disease that affects the quality of life for millions of Americans. Environmental asthma triggers: are found around the home and can be eliminated with simple steps.

1.     Don’t allow smoking in your home or car. Children are especially sensitive to secondhand smoke, which can trigger asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
2.     Dust and clean your home regularly.
3.     Clean up mold and fix water leaks.
4.     Control pests—close cracks and crevices and seal leaks.
5.     Children are especially sensitive to secondhand smoke, which can trigger asthma and other respiratory illnesses.

Mold can lead to allergic reactions, asthma, and other respiratory ailments. Mold can grow anywhere there is moisture in a house. The key to mold control is moisture control.
If mold is a problem in your home, you should clean up the mold promptly and fix the water problem. It is important to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, nausea, and can damage the liver, kidney, and central nervous system. Volatile organic compounds are chemicals that evaporate at room temperature. VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products used in homes including paints and lacquers, paint strippers, varnishes, cleaning supplies, air fresheners, pesticides, building materials, and furnishings.

1.     VOCs are released from products into the home both during use and while stored.
2.     Read and follow all directions and warnings on common household products.
3.     Make sure there is plenty of fresh air and ventilation (opening windows and using extra fans) when painting, remodeling, or using other products that may release VOCs.
4.     Never mix products, such as household cleaners, unless directed to do so on the label.
5.     Store household products that contain chemicals according to manufacturers’ instructions. Keep all products away from children!
